Here is my latest sock project. It is A Good Sock yarn in the Knitter's Guide to the Galaxy colorway. I casted this project on before I had to go to the grocery store and I knew I would be waiting in line. I had completed my Cabin Cove Cosmic socks and desparately needed simple sock knitting to take along. I casted on and worked 2 rows of ribbing before I left. In line, I managed to complete 2 more rows of ribbing, much to the chagrin of the man in front of me as his wife started asking me some knitting questions. It turned out, however, that I casted on 68 sts instead of my usual 64 sts. I used my new Knit Picks 2.5 mm 32" circular needles which I really like and plan to buy more. This sock fits my larger left foot okay, for my right foot, I am using 2.25 mm dpns in hopes of creating a slightly smaller sock.
I usually cast on with a k2 p2 long-tail style cast on for my socks. I do the regular long tail stitch for the knit sts and this purl cast on for the purl sts. I do not start with a slip knot, I just put the needle on top of the yarn (which is going across my left thumb and index finger) and twist, creating a starting loop. For my recently completed Asparagus Cable socks, I casted on according to how the sts would be worked, for instance k2 followed by p3. I previously used the long tail cast on for my socks, but I like the look of the k2 p2 cast on much better.

Unbelievable!!!!!!

I love the detail you give to your cast on. I'm normally not too picky about how I cast on. As long as it fits, I'm good to go. Now, you've got me rethinking my methods.

Why was the husband so upset? Was he secretly covetting the sock?
I like the cabled cast on, but for socks it doesn't really matter because I am pretty much only doing them toe up now, having the worries about whether I will have enough yarn to make socks to fit my feet.
Pretty colorway.

Ah-ha, a long-tail purl! How very clever!
I agree, it's all in the details :)

Now I know the different cast-ons. As I knit my socks toe-up, I never had to worry about casting on.

I also appreciate the detail you give of your projects. I have never tried knitting in line at the grocery but I do knit alot on road trips, lunch breaks, doctor visits.
