Picot Edging

Picot_1I received my lovely Celtic Swan needles in the mail today and casted on with Socks and Socksability.  I decided to do a picot edge as I thought my usual K2,P2 ribbing would distort the pretty colors of my yarn.  For Socktoberfest, I will explain this simple process of creating a picot edge.  I hold two needles together and do a long-tail cast-on of 68 sts.  I knit 8 rounds.  On the next round I *yo, k2tog* around and then I knit 8 more rounds.  To save me from sewing the edging down later, on the next round, I fold along the picot so my cast-on edge is close to my needle.  I put the right needle through the stitch on the left needle and the corresponding stitch of my cast-on edge and I knit these 2 stitches together.  I do this for the entire round and then continue in stockinette.  I recommend paying close attention to the first few stitches being picked up from the cast-on edge.  Take a little time to make sure that the stitch on the needle matches the edge stitch or the edging may end up slanted.

This picot edge is nice and stretchy and gives me a change of pace.  I do get tired of knitting K2,P2 ribbing and I keep counting my rows till I am through it.  My socks go more quickly after the ribbing section.  These needles are wonderful to knit with and I think they are slightly larger than 2.0 mm (yes, that matters to me).  I casted on 68 sts instead of my usual 72 sts so my socks will be the right tightness for me as I do prefer my socks to fit snuggly.

I would like to thank Sheri of The Loopy Ewe for her extra special customer service.  I ordered these needles and a skein of sock yarn on Friday night and received them today.  She included needle inventory cards, colorful sock yarn samples, and a personal note with my order.  I am one happy sock knitter!
